SM-karsintakilpailut, Turku 12.-13.9.98 Tamperelaiset juhlivat Turun SM-karsinnoissa ja varmistivat kaksi pelaajaa SM-sarjaan. Jatkoon pääsivät Markku Jantunen 2 dan ja Lauri Aapola 1 kyu. SM-sarjapaikkojen lisäksi jaettiin roppakaupalla korotuksia: Teemu Rovio 3 kyu, Jaakko Virtanen 7 kyu, Paavo Pietarila 9 kyu, Jyrki Kivinen 11 kyu ja Seppo Suorsa 14 kyu. Turnauksen yllä- tyksiin lukeutui myös "Naisten kierros", kun Sari ja Helena kumpikin voittivat pelinsä ennakkoon enemmän veikattuja Markusta ja Mikaa vastaan.
