Japan-Europe Mutual Understanding Scholarship Programme 2008 (5 week stay in Japan)
As one of the efforts to promote youth exchanges and enhance mutual understanding between Japan and Europe, the Government of Japan offers the Japan-Europe Mutual Understanding Scholarship Programme (In Japanese:Nihon-Oushuu Koukousei Kouryuu Puroguramu).
In this programme, the students from European countries will take part in about 5-week stay in Japan, in which they will take an intensive Japanese course (about 1 week), attend classes in a Japanese high school where classes are taught in Japanese, stay in Japanese ordinary households(about 3 weeks), and excursion(5 days) in Japan.
From Finland, ONE student can participate in this programme
Term From the end of June until the end of July 2008 (exact date is not yet confirmed)
Qualifications The applicant should: (a) be 16 or 17 years of age or in the 1st or 2nd year at senior high school (as of the end of June 2008 when the program begin), or (b) be a citizen of Finland and have no Japanese nationality (c) already have basic knowledge of Japanese language or be eager to learn it. (d) have a keen interest in the country and culture of Japan (e) have an ability to communicate in English and adopt to Japanese family custom (f) have no imminent plan for a long-term stay (for one month or longer) in Japan in the future.
How to Apply Applicants should submit the following documents.
(1) Application form with a photo (prescribed form) (2) Certified school records
The documents should arrive at the Embassy of Japan by April 11. (Submitting by e-mail or by fax is NOT accepted.)
The Embassy will select potential candidates judging from the submitted documents and inform them to conduct interviews (interview is supposed to be in the week beginning on April 13), including English and Japanese ability tests.
Notes 1.The Embassy recommends the candidate to Headquarters of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tokyo according to the result of the selection. The final decision will be made in Tokyo.
2.The Japanese Government will provide ONLY air-fares, as well as cost for insurance, transportation cost to the school where you go in Japan, and excursion in Japan. The participant is requested to bare other expenses.
3.When you are selected as the candidate and the substitute by the Embassy, you are requested, for the final decision made in Tokyo, to fill in the form in which you are requested to write more detailed information about you and short essay and also requested to submit your photo and a photocopy of the passport.
4.After coming back from Japan, Embassy will contact with the participant to ask his/her opinion about this programme. The participant is also requested to write an essay about your experience in Japan.

Japan-Europe Highs School Student Exchange Program for 2009 -ohjelma
Edistääkseen Suomen ja Japanin välistä nuorisovaihtoa, Japanin hallitus järjestää suomalaisille lukiolaisille mahdollisuuden tutustua Japaniin Japan-Europe High School Student Exchange Program for 2009 – ohjelman kautta. Ohjelma sisältää japaninkielen kurssin, osallistumisen japanilaisen lukion opetukseen sekä perhemajoituksen. Vuonna 2009 Suomalaisilla on mahdollisuus hakea joko viiden viikon tai viiden kuukauden mittaiseen ohjelmaan. Japanin valtio maksaa edestakaiset matkat Japaniin ja kaikki ohjelmaan liittyvät suorat kulut Japanissa. Osallistujat valitaan hakemuksen ja haastattelun perusteella.
Perusvaatimukset:
- 16-17 -vuotias tai lukion ensimmäisellä tai toisella luokalla
- Suomen kansalaisuus (ei saa olla Japanin kansalaisuutta)
- perustiedot japanin kielestä tai halu oppia sitä
- englanninkielen taito
